Norfolk Island Pine is an evergreen ornamental tree.
- Norfolk Island Pine (Also known as Araucaria Heterophylla) is a popular ornamental pyramidal conifer that has a regular tier of horizontal branches, which are radiating outward from upright strong trunk. With its native origin to Norfolk Island, these are slow-growing but also long-lasting robust species. This species grows about 30 – 60m and is distinct by their appearance. Norfolk Island Pine is dioecious that means there are two different types of cones on separate trees, male cones and female cones. The female cones are of 15 cm long and are globular with spiny-scaled. Whereas, male cones are of 5 cm and are cylindrical and emerge in clusters. Female cones are produced when trees are more than 15 years old whereas Male cones are produced when trees are more than 40 years old. With its robust nature, easy to care condition and attractive spiky tall look, these trees will stand out at your patios or outdoor gardens.
Norfolk Island Pine got some traditional uses.
- When grown outside in a large form, timber from such large trees were used in making furniture, shipbuilding and even in constructions. And when they are houseplants, most of them are used for decoration purposes during the holiday season in the west, especially during Christmas, as Christmas trees.
Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria Heterophylla) is easy to care for.
- This evergreen tree will perform well when kept in presence of full sunlight. Water them enough to keep their soil moist. The soil on which they are supposed to be planted must be well-drained. To sight their healthy growth, the ideal temperature must be 18.33 – 22.22 degree Celsius. And it can tolerate night up to 10 degree Celsius. In terms of feeding, use organic fertilizers.
It’s not a pet-friendly plant.
- Parts of this evergreen tree are mildly toxic. And their ingestion may cause mild gastric upset or vomiting. Therefore, it’s not advisable to plant them near children and pets.
